The adventures of Sherlock Holmes

mzl The adventures of Sherlock HolmesSherlock Holmes is a very intelligent detective. He solves his cases in a very strange and elegant way. In this book there’s a case which took all my attention; it’s the case of Mr. Clair in “the man with the twisted lip” where he talked about the phenomenon of begging.
Mr. Clair was living in a small town with his wife and two children. He was a journalist and his boss asked him once to write an article about beggars. So, he decided to disguise like a real beggar and he named himself as Hugh Boone. He discovered later on that he could make more money as a beggar than working in the office for a long time with low income.
He used to go out every day at the same time to work in the city and come at the same time at night. One day he promised his kids to buy them some toys and he went as usual to his work. What happened later is that his wife was also going to the city and she saw him by chance in the window of a building in which he was changing himself as Boone to Mr. Clair again.
His wife was so worried about him; she went to the building, asked about him and called the police for she thought something must have happened to him. The police then went upstairs to investigate about the subject, when they entered to that room where she saw her husband; they found Boone wearing the clothes of Mr. Clair then they arrested him with suspicion of murder.
What I’m trying to say from this exciting story of living two different lives by such a shameful work, is that those beggars are somehow like thieves. Even if they don’t steal people directly, they make them believe that they really need that money.
We always hear about those stories in TV or in the radio; they find a fortune in a beggar’s house, even if that beggar has enough money to live in a beautiful and honorable way, he cannot stay away from begging, it becomes like an addiction to do such a work.
Well, of course we won’t be able to change people’s attitudes but we can raise the Good in our children who are going to be the leaders of the future, we can teach them how to depend on themselves not on others. Because this problem comes in the first place from our children’s education in addition to poverty, social problems and so on…
However, the questions here are: why should a person humiliate himself by begging? Can’t we do something to help those people rather than just giving them money? Can we believe all the beggars we meet in the street? How can we know that they really need that money?
There’re so many questions to be asked. But do we have any answers to all of them?!!
